Birthstone Jewelry For Mothers – A Representation of Motherhood
Thursday, April 7th, 2011Birthstones take the forefront in jewelry specifically made for mothers to symbolize the birth of their children. This jewelry can also contain the birthstone of the father and the mother themselves. Birthstones correlate with the months of the year and there are twelve for each month.
Birthstone jewelry that represents family has been around since Biblical times. A garment was worn by the temple’s High Priest festooned with stones that represented the twelve tribes of that era.
The first type of mothers jewelry featuring the birthstones of children was a piece made with two wedding bands joined by birthstones. These rings were a big seller during the 60′s and it was traditional that the stones be set from oldest child to the youngest.
Birthstones are given certain attributes or powers that have come down from age to age. The person wearing the stone is supposed to get power from it. A mother wearing a child’s birthstone is said to receive those attributes. A mother with a child born in March would wear an Aquamarine. Aquamarine is supposed to bring love and affection to the wearer who is supposed to be able to make friends easily. The mother would be well respected and liked in the community and should have many friends. Folklore also states that the child will be protected from all ill as long as the mother wears that birthstone.
Today mother’s jewelry comes in many forms. It can be found in necklaces, bracelets, and broaches. Rings continue to be popular with the legend that they are a never ending circle symbolic of a mother’s love. In ancient times it was thought that the third finger of the left hand was attached to the heart, the reason a wedding band was worn on that finger. Mother’s rings are also worn on that finger symbolizing motherly love.
Mother’s rings can take different shapes. They can have one large stone with many smaller ones or there can be one per ring that is piled up on the finger. Many times the stones are of varying sizes the largest being the oldest child. Mother’s jewelry can be a great gift to a mother that will remind her of her children forever.
